Introduction
National strategies, for the effective delivery of mental health services, like the Ten Shared Capabilities, promote the involvement of service users and carers. For service user and carer involvement to be fully realised it needs to be part of interdisciplinary mental health education. Service users and carers as ‘experts through experience’ enrich the teaching and learning experiences of students through their involvement in all stages of mental health professional training.

Partnership in teaching
The Ten Shared Capabilities expect mental health education to be based on partnerships that promote the integration of service user and carer input into every aspect of the teaching programme.

The following exercises have been created to stimulate thought and debate about some of the processes required to engage ‘experts through experience’ in the delivery of teaching programmes.
